Whether it is down to its seemingly endless mass, the peculiarity of its population, or its storied and chaotic history both political and cultural, Russia has often, in direct juxtaposition to its conservative reputation, produced some of the most beautiful, moving and enduring pieces in the repertoire. Under the baton of James Gaffigan, the NSO gather this November to celebrate three such works, from luminaries Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Khachaturian.

Joined by pianist Simon Trpceski, the recital will begin with Prokofiev's staggering Symphony No.3, repurposed from a rarely performed opera, before we move on to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.2, a cheery tribute for his son Maxim and end in style with Khachaturian's suite from Masquerade, including his famous waltz.
