OVER DIRECTED
One of the most brilliant parts of Angels is its soaring, tangled, multi-layered text. Unfortunately, in this production, the words are lost under the over-directed fluffy staging. It’s not the actors’ fault: they perform adequately for the most part, with Justin Weakes’ Belize a true standout star. But the weird sand floor, the hyper direction with nigh slapstick timing (in a show that is not intended to be a comedy), and the heavy-handed emphasis to make sure the audience is aware various items (ringing bowls, throwing sand, red gloves) Are A Symbol all threaten to strangle the audience’s ability to empathize with the characters and see the nuance. In particular, the audience is left disliking Louis throughout, and resenting the bloated production as a whole.
