A West Coast Premiere: Program A

Joining forces with the Kenned Center Opera House Orchestra, the San Francisco Ballet showcases two new west coast premieres at the Opera House this fall, showcasing the work of boundary pushing choreographers at the vanguard of modern dance theater. Chosen from the company's critically acclaimed Unbound Festival performances, Program A features the works of award-winning American choreographer Trey McIntyre, English Royal Ballet artistic associate Christopher Wheeldon and leading British choreographer David Dawson.

The evening sets off at a flying pace with McIntyre's emotional whirlwind Your Flesh Shall Be A Great Poem, a kinetic melding of memories about his grandfather that evokes both delight and pain in exploring the loss of a loved one. Wheeldon's Bound To then examines a relationship of a vastly different nature, that of human and technology. The social-critique ballet sees an ensemble of dancers entranced by their smart phones, moving to the music of English folk musician Keaton Henson. Focusing on the nature of opposites, Dawson's abstract Jung-inspired piece Anima Animus brings things to a close.
