TO BURY OR OBEY THE LAW...
Sophocles' desolate tale of determination over duty transfers over to Washington's Kennedy Center this October, following its North American premiere at Brooklyn's BAM Theatre. Starring Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, The Clouds of Sils Marie), this new translation by Canadian poet Anne Carson is brought to the stage by avant garde Belgian director Ivo Van Hove. He sets the action on a mournful and starkly lit stage, with vast monochrome videoscapes providing a backdrop for the unfolding philosophical and physical tragedy that changes her life forever.
What Is AntiGone About?
When Antigone's brother Polynices is labeled as a traitor and dies in battle, King Kreon of Thebes dictates that his body is lain outside the city gates and left as carrion for nature, not sanctified by holy rites. Desolate and grieving, Antigone defies his edict in order to give her brother a proper burial, but is torn by the obligation as a citizen and the ties of blood and family.
