Washington National Opera presents the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning ragtime pioneer Scott Joplin's 'forgotten opera', coming to the Kennedy Center next Spring! Featuring a singular score inspired by ragtime and folk music, Treemonisha is set to be a truly unique opera experience.
1884. The deep South. On a former enslaved plantation, an isolated community lives under the influence of old superstitions and the misleading words of conjurers. Treemonisha, a young and free woman, sets out to lead her community into a new era of education and harmony - but the conjurers are determined to hold onto their power, and will stop at nothing to prevent Treemonisha from taking it from them. Inspired by folk tales and Black history, Joplin's extraordinary opera garnered him a posthumous Pulitzer Prize.
