Why see Washington National Opera - Aida?

A modern treatment of Verdi's epic opera

Washington Opera present a brand-new, exciting restaging of Verdi's epic, Aida. Verdi's powerful music with parkour and modern dance in the background, the story of the two warring societies is giving a more relevancy that closely mirrors the Arab Spring. With brand-new visuals by RETNA and a more modernistic setting, everything you could want from an opera is here.

A beautiful Ethiopian princess currently lives in the city of Thebes as a slave to the Pharoah's daughter. She is secretly in love with the military hero Radames, however he is pursued by Amneris, the Egyptian King's daughter, herself a princess. Nobody knows Aida's true identity, which has kept her safe up to now, and her father in Ethiopia is making battle plans to take her back, disguises as a common soldier within his troops. Amneris, suspecting that Aida is her love rival, draws in the naive girl with false friendliness in order to draw her secret out, after all, how could a man choose a foreigner over her, a princess? After Radames leads the Egyptians in defending their land, he succeeds in capturing the Ethiopian king as well as thousands of others.

A Moving Performance

Knowing that the Washington National Opera apparently does not believe in spending money on beautiful sets or costumes, I was apprehensive about how ugly the sets/costumes would be for Aida. This was especially after seeing the work of artist Retna who designed the sets for Aida. Well, it was a pleasant surprise to find that the spare, contemporary setting did not detract from the pleasure of the music and the story telling. The performances were excellent. Everyone sang well, but Yonghoon Lee, in the role of Radames, was outstanding. His acting really made me feel for the naive young hero who is torn between love for Aida and love for his country. And what a beautiful voice! Comparing this production to a more traditional Aida at the Met in NYC (many years ago) with animals, beautiful sets and costumes, I would say this DC performance is much more memorable - due to the excellence of the cast. I would strongly recommend that you catch this production of Aida. ... Read more
