Why See Washington National Opera - Dead Man Walking?

Based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean and created with American popular styles, Jake Heggie's first opera is a powerful meditation on forgiveness and the morality of the death penalty, coming from Prejean's experience as a spiritual advisor to two men on Death Row for murder.

With a libretto by Terrence McNally, Dead Man Walking is a raw encounter for audiences and was praised as an instant classic upon its 2000 premiere. Whilst, not an easy story to tell, Heggie and McNally's collaboration is moving, heartbreaking and an example of how opera continues to be one of the most potent and arresting art forms.
