Based on the 1948 novel by Alan Paton, Kurt Weill began work on Lost in the Stars, his final stage work, just a few months after publication, eager to translate Paton's powerful image of life in aparthied South Africa into an equally emotional musical tragedy.
The story of a black priest Stephen Kumalo, played by Bass Baritone Eric Owens, who travels from his rural parish to the dangerous city of Johannesburg in search of his wayward son, he does not guess that his life, family and faith is about to be shaken to the core by a crime of desperation.
A fascinating and compelling show, the soundtrack journeys through Gospel, Broadway, Jazz and Spirituals as this mediation on finding compassion and holding on to hope plays out.
