American fear or American worldview
A world premiere drama about the post 9/11 world and the American worldview forms part of the 2018 Women's Voices Theater Festival. DC playwright Annalisa Dias presents a searing new drama that asks its viewers what it means to be American in today's world. With the political climate in turmoil after the 2016 elections, this timely play focuses on the plight of a prisoner in Camp X-Ray, who has been held without charge for 12 years - or 4,380 days. Fear rules his life and his interactions with his jailers, a common theme that has been revealed in the news of late.
The hidden prison
Malik Djamal Ahmad Essaid's plight is juxtaposed with poetry and visual symbolism, with real-life events intersecting his frightening experiences in Guantanamo. What we get is a study into fear itself, arguably the most perilous prison for anybody alive today.
This new drama forms part of the worldwide Heidi Thomas Writers' Initiative, which seeks to showcase new works by female playwrights with female directors. Named after Thomas, who is the writer behind the phenomenally successful BBC series Call The Midwife.
