50 years of the Kennedy center

Commissioned by Jackie Kennedy Onassis for the opening of the Kennedy Center in 1971, Leonard Bernstein's Mass returns to close the venue's 50th-anniversary celebrations. Directed by Alison Moritz, with choreography from Hope Boykin, MASS is Bernstein's attempt to capture the spirit of a nation at the end of a tumultuous decade and lift its spirits with his message of love and acceptance, peace and healing.

From sacred Latin texts to electric guitar riffs, marching bands to contributions from Paul Simon and Broadway's Stephen Schwartz, Bernstein's epic Mass is a diamond with many facets and a glorious celebration of hope and peace. Featuring 300 artists the work's full title 'Mass, a theatre piece for singers, players and dancers' is truly represented!
