Africa Umoja

Africa Umoja at Warner Theater

Why see Africa Umoja?

Marvel at the beautiful costumes and award-winning, internationally acclaimed choreography. AFRICA UMOJA is a loud, colourful and jubilant celebration of life that audiences from all backgrounds have found infectiously delightful and uplifting. 26 countries have embraced the traditional love songs, lullabies and other musical expressions of rural life. They have also cried along in the city streets listening to music reflecting the pain of the migrant labourers and their families.

Relive the energy of Sophiatown, infused with passionate voices as they tell their story. The heart is saddened by cold stories of forced removals yet the feet continue to stomp along with the explosions of gumboot dancing.

There are also the reminiscent sounds of the vibrant jazz that forced its way free from the constraints of the times and a thread of gospel music running through the tale recalls the huge helpings of faith and courage. This saw black South Africans through some of the country's stormiest historical passages.

Experience the remarkable journey traveled to the current sounds of Kwaito!

A fantastic group of performers

We loved this!!! So full of joy and energy and color. Amazingly talented singers and dancers. Great costumes. great drumming and so much athleticism - humor too. And the narrator, who tells the story/history of South African music/dance, was just perfect. Gave some context without going on too long. Every performer (and it was a troupe of about 20? or so - was so engaging. Go see it!!! They need a better publicist - on the other hand if they had one it wouldn't have been so easy to get a seat! ... Read more

Phenomenal Performance!!!!

OMG, this show was fantastic. I havent seen such great performances and singers in years. There was fantastic singing and dancing. It made you want to get up out of your seat. It will send chills down your spine. The costumes were beautifully executed on both men and women. There wasn't a singing voice that wasn't angelic. Tell all your friends and family to go see this show. Broadway here they come. ... Read more

Spectacular Performance

This show was amazing! If you have an appreciation for real, raw art, then you will like this show. The story is so real and well depicted. I would go to see this show again and again and again. The theatre is beautifully designed and added to the elegance and ambience. I went on the 1st night - August 8/13 and the turn out was poor - not sure that it was effectively advertised, but if you have a chance to go, please, see this show and appreciate the culture...so rich! ...
