Tchaikovsky's radiant Russian lyric opera returns to the WNO after 30 years
Based on the sweeping Russian novel by celebrated literary great Alexander Pushkin, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin has all the hallmarks of great opera - a tragic anti-hero, pulse-quickening romance and hotblooded drama. Experience the raw emotion and deeply expressive music of the radiant lyric opera's soaring score during its return to the Washington National Opera's stage, 30 years after it was last performed by the company.
When the dashing, handsome young gentleman Eugene Onegin is introduced to the Larin family, its eldest daughter Tatiana falls in love with him instantly. When the young girl professes her love for him, he replies with scorn, instead flirting with her younger sister Olga, causing a fatal rift between himself and Olga's fiancee Lensky. Many years later, after a series of tragic events, Onegin meets Tatiana again and is overwhelmed by her matured beauty and grace. While her heart's fires reignite, Tatiana is in no position to return the love Onegin once spurned...
