The washington premiere of a teen love story
A charming LGBT coming-of-age story makes its Washington premiere at the Signature Theatre as part of its 2017/18 season! First premiering in Los Angeles' Berkeley Rep in 2010, we venture back to 1993 when flannel and denim were all the rage, and mixtapes were the best way to express your love for someone; enter Girlfriend. Set to the music of Matthew Sweet's alt-rock album of the same name, two young high-school students find love just before they graduate in a delightful exploration of first-love and coming to terms with their sexuality.
What is it about?
Written by Todd Almond, the story follows shy outsider Will, a gay teen living in Nebraska in 1993. Having managed to get through high school despite being bullied mercilessly, he is approached just before graduation by the school jock, Mike - who as it turns out, is secretly gay himself. Tentatively and secretly hanging out, they both get to know each other and fall in love with each other over the course of some weeks.
However the clock is ticking away for them both over the summer, as Mike is headed to Lincoln to study medicine; following in the footsteps of his doctor father. When the two finally consummate their fledgling relationship, will the summer spell be broken? Or will they stay together?
