Tina Fey's brand new musical adaptation!
Announced, fittingly, on October 3rd (aka "Mean Girls Day"), a new musical stage adaptation of the hit movie by Tina Fey will premiere in Fall 2017. With a talented creative team on board, including Legally Blonde lyricist Nell Benjamin and composer Jeffrey Richmond (Fey's husband, no less!), this new musical is set to take us all back to high school, where being part of the in-crowd seems like everything, but where popularity comes at a price. In other words, we think this news is "So Fetch!". Yup, like Gretchen, we're trying to make it a thing....
What is it about?
Following Cady Heron from her idyllic wild upbringing in Africa back to her native USA, the kind, home-schooled teen faces a trial by fire when she enrols at high school for the very first time - and comes up against the clique of popular girls who set out to make her life miserable.
However, Cady has more than a few tricks of her own up her sleeve, and sets out to beat "The Plastics" at their own mean game with the help of two other social outcasts, Janis and Damian, one of whom has a vendetta against the leader of the Plastics. As Cady starts becoming more and more like the mean girls in question, she finds herself becoming more popular, and attracting the attention of the hottest guy at school. But at what cost? When the contents of a certain journal are spilled out across the school, the whole system threatens to fall down, Cady is faced with a stark choice; popularity or sincerity?
A cultural phenomenon
Released in 2004, the movie became a critically acclaimed hit, marking the breakout performances of both Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried in the process. It also coincided with the widespread release of Facebook to the global audience. But it is forever synonymous with the date "October 3rd", uttered by Cady in a crucial scene!
