Why See Washington National Opera: The Elixir of Love?

Handsome Nemorino uses a "magical tonic" to win the feisty Adina's affections in Donizetti's warm and inspired masterpiece; much beloved for its whimsical wit, endearing characters, beautiful arias and gorgeous duets.

Donizetti's loveable comic opera sees a handsome but impoverished peasant falling desperately in love for the fickle and feisty landowner Adina. But without a penny to his, how can he possibly compete with wealthy Sergeant Belcore, Adina's dashing yet pompous suitor?;

Enter Doctor Dulcamara, a travelling "doctor", who sells our hero the elixir of love - which in fact is just cheap table wine. However, Nemorino is convinced that this magical tonic has empowered him to win Adina's affections - even as her wedding to Belcore begins! Might his newfound confidence and charm melt her fickle heart after all?

This operatic favorite is performed frequently throughout the world, and features "Una furtiva lagrima", one of the most hauntingly beautiful of all tenor arias in opera.
