Why See Washington National Opera: Ring Cycle - The Valkyrie?

Classical & Opera

A FORBIDDEN LOVE IGNITED. A DEFIANT WARRIOR AVENGED

The second part of Wagner's Ring Cycle, The Valkyrie concerns the continuing fortunes of cunning dwarf Alberich as he scrambles to get his ring of power back from the ruler of the Gods Wontan. Under Alberich's curse, Wotan is driven to siring a human child in order to escape its dark shadow as he reaches the very limits of his power.

The Valkyrie

As Wontan desperately seeks a way out of his curse, his children run into trouble. Siegmund, his half mortal and innocent son finds himself battling his nemises Hunding, after falling for his wife Sieglinde who is, unbeknownst to either of them, his twin sister. Whilst the fight continues on earth, the Gods look down. Wotan besdeeches his Brunnhilde, his Valkyerie daughter, a reaper of heroes, to protect his son. But his wife, Fricka, the protector of Wedlock is angered by the adultery and incest he has committed and bids Brunnhilde to make sure he dies. Torn between compassion and duty, Brunnhilde awaits a terrible fate...

Epic, bloody and magnificent, Wagner gave us one of opera's most recognisable pieces 'The Ride of the Valkyries' in this excellent fable of warring Gods and monsters.
