Why See Washington National Opera: Moby-Dick?

One man's obsession leaves a wake of destruction in Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer's triumphant new opera, retelling Herman Melville's 19th-century masterwork.

Consumed with killing the fabled white whale that cost him his leg, Captain Ahab relentlessly scours the ocean, without regard for the living souls who serve him aboard the Pequod. Among his loyal crew - including lookout Greenhorn, cabin boy Pip, and island native Queequeg - only the first mate Starbuck sees the futility of the voyage. As Ahab spirals further into madness, no one can escape the inevitable, epic showdown.
