New production
For the first time in its illustrious history, Washington National Opera take on the work of modern maestro Philip Glass in this brand new production of his groundbreaking opera Appomattox, with a world premiere of a newly written second act for this tale of the struggle for equality.
Timely, powerful and moving, Appomattox begins 150 years ago, in the dark days at the end of the Civil War as Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant battle to put an end to slavery and racial inequality and flashes forward to the civil rights movement and the historic march from Selma to Montgomery as led by Martin Luther King Jr. Appomattox imagines the insight into the lives of these legendary leaders and the strain their actions have on their personal relationships and humanity, questioning if prejudice can ever be overcome, or is history doomed to repeat itself.
Riveting, bold and dramatic, the work's anti-war message has not thinned since the first appearance in 2007.
