America's ballet company
The American Ballet Theatre usher in their 75th Anniversary with these three classic pieces from their repertoire.
Program
Themes & Variations (George Balanchine/Tchaikovsky)
Hoping to 'evoke that great period in classical dancing when Russian ballet flourished', Balanchine's minimalistic Themes & Variations has no overt narrative that helps to display the talent and artistry of the company and the legendary choreographer's vision.
Pillar of Fire (Antony Tudor/Schoenberg)
An Edwardian tale of a middle sister's desperate quest to avoid life-long spinsterism, Tudor's first American Ballet after his relocation from Britain, Pillar of Fire sees Hagar take on conventional society as she finds herself shut out from happiness, seemingly forever in this dramatic and passionate work.
Rodeo (de Mille/Copland)
An early example of a truly American ballet, classical ballet meets Broadway spectacle in this love story that eschews traditional gender roles. A tomboyish Cowgirl is torn between finding acceptance with her male colleagues and looking for love - against the odds. An exuberant and wonderfully comic ending to any evening.
