Together on stage they make magic, but behind closed doors the drama is all too real for theater's favorite newlywed acting couple.
Based on a 1910 comedy by Hungarian Ferenc Molnar, The Guardsman was staged on Broadway in 1924 with real husband-and-wife acting legends Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt to extraordinary success.
Called "an amusing evening's entertainment" by the New York Times, it was a smash hit; so much so that Lunt and Fontanne reprised their performances for a movie version.
The story of a jealous husband who dons a silly disguise to seduce his own wife only to have his darkest suspicions confirmed, The Guardsman asks the question "where does the acting end and true emotion begin?"
